WDC Competition Rules & Guidelines

Qualifications

This competition is open to Studios (grades PreK-12), Elementary Schools (public & private), Middle Schools (public and private), and High Schools (public and private).


Props, Backdrops, & Stages

Curtains, staging, and other props for routines should be constructed to fit through a standard size double gym door with the center support bar removed (found at most public school gymnasiums). Props and staging may have minor assembly on the floor, but setup and breakdown time for props and staging will be added to the actual routine performance time length to produce total floor time. Total floor time should not exceed 5 minutes for all dance categories except show production (10 minutes). Any exceptions must be approved by the contest administrator, in advance of the competition. Division Breakdown

Solos - $50

Divisions: Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (public and private).

Time Limit: 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Awards: Award Ceremony on Saturday afternoon in PAC. Top 5 announced, Medals Awarded, Winners of each division (public & private) performs.

Divisions: 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th (public and private).

Time Limit: 2 minutes 30 seconds

Awards: Award Ceremony on Saturday evening at conclusion of event. Top 5 announced, Medals Awarded, 12th Grade Winner (public & private) performs. (Only 12th Grade Solo Finalists need to be in costume at award ceremony).

duets - $60

Divisions: Pre-K - Kinder, 1st - 3rd, 4th - 6th, 7th - 8th, 9th - 12th (public and private).

Time Limit: 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Awards: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners in each division are announced and both dancers receive a medal.

Please Note: All duets will be classified in the age category based on the oldest dancer.

small ensembles - $70

Divisions: PreK - Kinder, 1st - 3rd, 4th - 6th, 7th - 8th, 9th - 12th (public and private).

Size: 3 - 5 dancers.

Time Limit: 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Awards: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners in each division are announced and receive a trophy. Ensembles are eligible for Judges Awards. Judges Awards will be awarded to routines the judges believe have special merit.

Please Note: All ensembles will be classified in the age category based on the oldest dancer.

medium ensembles - $75

Divisions: Prek - kinder, 1st - 3rd, 4th - 6th, 7th - 8th, 9th - 12th (public and private).

Size: 6 - 10 dancers.

Time Limit: 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Awards: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners in each division are announced and receive a trophy. Ensembles are eligible for Judges Awards. Judges Awards will be awarded to routines the judges believe have special merit.

large ensembles - $80

officer - $85

Divisions: Lower Elementary (Kinder - 3rd), Upper Elementary (4th - 5th), Middle School (6-8), High School Pep (9th-12th), High School JV (9th-12th), High School Varsity (9th-12th).

Categories: Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Kick, Pom, Prop, Open, Military, Novelty, Modern.

Time Limit: 3 minutes (5 minutes with entry and exit).

Awards: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners in each division are announced and receive a trophy. Officer lines are eligible for Judges Awards. Judges Awards will be awarded to routines the judges believe have special merit.

In order to be eligible for Overall Grand Champion & High Point Winner awards, officer lines must compete at least 3 routines.

Entrances and Exits are not part of the scoring process.

Officer routines should be comprised of the same students for each routine.

Special circumstances such as students with injuries being pulled from some but not all routines are accepted.

team - $100

Divisions: Lower Elementary (Kinder - 3rd), Upper Elementary (4th - 5th), Middle School (6th-8th), High School Pep (9th-12th), High School JV (9th-12th), High School Varsity (9th-12th).

Categories: Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Kick, Pom, Prop, Open, Military, Novelty, Modern.

Time Limit: 3 minutes (5 minutes with entrance and exit).

Awards: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners in each division are announced and receive a trophy. Teams are eligible for Judges Awards. Judges Awards will be awarded to routines the judges believe have special merit.

MULTI-AGED TEAM RULE: Teams that have a range of ages within their team (i.e. elementary, middle, and/or high school) may register for the division which makes up 70% or more of their team.
Example: If 80% of your team is upper elementary division aged and 20% mixed middle school, you will register as Upper Elementary.

High School Pep and JV team members may NOT also be a member of Varsity level.

Special circumstances such as students with injuries being pulled from some but not all routines are accepted.

Team performances will be in a standard high school basketball court arena.

In order to be eligible for Overall Grand Champion & High Point Winner awards, teams must compete at least 3 routines.

Entrances & Exits are not part of the scoring process.

adjudication only/exhibition - $55

Divisions: Lower Elementary (Kinder - 3rd), Upper Elementary (4th - 5th), Middle School (6th-8th), High School Pep (9th-12th), High School JV (9th-12th), High School Varsity (9th-12th), Ballet Entries.

Categories: Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Kick, Pom, Prop, Open, Military, Modern.

Time Limit: 3 minutes (5 minutes with entrance and exit).

Awards: Adjudication/Exhibition Only routines are not eligible for awards.

Pointe Solo (new choreography, not a classical variation) - $50

Classical Variation - $50

Ballet Solo (not en pointe) - $50

Pas De Deux/Duet - $60

Ballet Small Ensemble (9 or less) - $70

Ballet Large Ensemble (10 or more) - $80

Exhibition - $55

Divisions: Middle School (6th, 7th, 8th) and High School (9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th).

Time: See Below

Solos:  Up to 2:30 min

Pas-de-Deux/Duet: Entre, Adagio, Coda, and Variation: up to 10:00 min

Small Ensemble: 9 or less dancers: up to 3:00 min

Large Ensemble: 10 or more dancers: up to 4:30 min

Awards: Solo Finalists (top 5) will be announced for each division. Medals awarded to all finalists. All awards are at the conclusion of the event. 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place winners for ensembles and duet divisions are announced and receive a trophy. Ensembles are eligible for Judges Awards. Judges Awards will be awarded to routines the judges believe have special merit.

*A certified ballet judge will be adjudicating all routines registered under the Ballet Entry category.

Please Note: All ensembles will be classified in the age category based on the oldest dancer.


Additional Information

If there is only one entry in a category, a score of 90 or above must be received from each judge in order to receive a first place trophy.

If a soloist competes two solos and places in both, he/she will only be allowed to final with the higher scoring of the two solos.


Judges Awards

Outstanding Choreography - Awarded for routines that have originality and creativity in choreography, at judge’s discretion.

Outstanding Technique - Awarded for routines that use and exemplify outstanding dance skills and technique, at judge’s discretion.

Outstanding Showmanship - Awarded for routines that have outstanding musical interpretation, theatrical presentation, and aids in conveying the performance's essential theme or message. At judge’s discretion.

Outstanding Costuming - Awarded for routines that have unique, eye appealing costumes, that emphasize the performance’s essential theme or message. At judge’s discretion.

Outstanding Entertainment - Awarded for routines that stand out in choreography, showmanship, presentation, and audience appeal. At judge’s discretion.


Refund Policy


Refunds must be requested at least 14 days prior to competition in writing. Phone calls will NOT be accepted as formal requests for cancellations. Cancellations made less than 14 days prior to the competition date will not receive refunds.

No refunds will be given due to inclement weather conditions unless the contest is cancelled.

All fees must be paid prior to competing.
